Make your own racing game

An AI racing game maker builds driving games from a description: the vehicles, how they handle, the track or arena, the opponents and the race rules. Modder's gives cars real physics, so they grip, slide, jump and crash, and fills the grid with bots that actually race.

Building a racing game

  1. Describe the ride

Say what you're driving and how it should feel: heavy and grippy, light and drifty, floaty like a hovercraft. Then say where: a looping track, a stadium, open water. Racing ideas get much better with one sentence about handling.

  2. It builds the car, the track and the rivals

The builder sets up vehicle physics, a chase camera, the track or arena, laps or a match timer, and bots with their own racing lines. Then it drives the game itself, on autopilot, to check that laps count, bots finish and nobody falls through the world.

  3. Tune it lap by lap

Racing is all tuning. Play a lap and say what you felt: too slippery, too slow off the line, bots too easy on the corners. Ask for a boost pad, a shortcut, a rival who rubber-bands, a ghost of your best lap. Each change is a saved version.

Kinds of racing games that work well

Arcade racers with a few laps and a podium are the easiest win. Kart battles add items and short arenas, which keeps rounds to two minutes and suits friends online. Car soccer swaps the finish line for a ball and two goals; Supersonic on this page is our take on it. Boat racing is a nice twist, because water physics makes every turn feel different. Endless driving, where you weave through traffic for distance, is another one that fits in a sentence.

Sim racing with real car models, licensed tracks and tyre wear isn't something a one-sentence build will get right. Stylised cars on made-up tracks look better and play better here.

What it does well, and what it doesn't

Good at

  • Vehicle physics: grip, drift, boost, jumps and collisions.
  • Bots that race lines, battle with items or play car soccer.
  • Short races and two-minute battle rounds, online with friends or split on one keyboard.

Current limits

  • No real car brands, licensed tracks or simulation-grade handling.
  • Very long tracks with lots of scenery come out plainer than short, dense ones.
  • Racing is best with a keyboard or controller; touch steering is basic.

Questions

Can I make a racing game with friends?

Yes. Pick Online with friends for rooms of up to 10 with an invite link, or One keyboard for 2 to 4 players on one computer. Bots fill empty grid spots.

Can I make a car soccer game?

Yes. Describe the arena, the ball and the boost, and the builder sets up ball physics and bots that chase, defend and shoot. Supersonic shows what that looks like.

Can I use a real car, like a specific sports car?

No real brands or licensed models. Describe the type of car (a boxy rally car, a low sports coupe) and the builder will make or find one in that style.

Does it work with a controller?

The engine reads controllers as well as keyboards, so racing games can be played with a gamepad.
