Is there a free AI game maker?

A free AI game maker would build games for you at no cost. On Modder, playing is free: every game, no account needed. Making games isn't free, because each build runs large AI models for several minutes and that has a real cost. The cheapest way in is a one-off credit top-up, with no subscription.

What you pay for, and when

  1. Playing: always free

Every game on Modder, from the Originals to the ones players publish, plays free in your browser with no account. A free account adds saves. That's not a trial; it stays that way.

  2. Making: credits

A build spends credits for the time the AI spends planning, writing, playing and fixing your game. You see an estimate before anything starts. A build holds a few credits while it runs and gives back what it didn't use, and a build that fails costs nothing.

  3. The cheapest ways in

A one-off top-up gives you enough credits for a few games with no subscription, and the credits stay until you use them. If you make games often, a monthly plan works out cheaper per game. Current prices are on the pricing page.

Why we don't offer free builds

A Modder build isn't one quick reply from a chatbot. The agent works for five to twenty-five minutes: it plans the game, writes dozens of files, generates art, then plays the game in a real browser, looks at what's on screen and fixes it, often several rounds. That's a lot of model time, and we'd rather charge a fair price for a game that works than give away builds that cut those corners.

So the honest answer to "is it free?" is: playing is, making isn't. We say it up front so you don't find out after typing your idea.

Free alternatives, if free is what you need

If you want to make games at no cost, there are good options. Scratch is free, made for beginners, and great for learning how games work. GDevelop is a free no-code engine for 2D and simple 3D games. Godot is a free, open-source engine that professionals use. None of them write the game for you, but all of them are free forever. Some AI game tools have small free tiers too, with weekly credits and limits on projects; our comparison pages go through them.

What it does well, and what it doesn't

Good at

  • Free play for everyone: every game, no account, in the browser.
  • No surprise charges: you see the credit estimate before a build, and failed builds cost nothing.
  • A no-subscription option: a one-off top-up whose credits don't expire with a plan month.

Current limits

  • No free builds. Making or remixing a game needs a plan or a top-up.
  • Free accounts don't include selling what you make; that's on paid plans.

Questions

Is Modder free?

Playing is free: every game, with no account. Making and remixing games needs a plan or a one-off credit top-up.

Is there a free trial for making games?

Not today. The lowest-cost way to try the maker is a one-off top-up, which is enough for a few games and has no subscription.

What happens to my credits if a build fails?

A build that fails costs nothing. A build holds credits while it runs and returns whatever it didn't use.

Are there free AI game makers?

Some AI game tools have free tiers with weekly credits and project limits. Fully free engines like Scratch, GDevelop and Godot don't write the game for you but cost nothing.

Do I need an account to play?

No. Every game on Modder plays free in your browser without one. A free account adds saves.
